The Bangkok City Tram (Bus) Tour

Operated by The Tourist Division of The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA).

The red or yellow vehicles themselves resemble a 'Blackpool tram' - The Bangkok City Tram (Bus) TourThe Bangkok City Tour leaves from its starting point at the south west corner of Sanam Luang (Sanam Park) at the junction of Na Phra That Road and Na Phra Lan Road opposite the north eastern corner wall of The Temple of The Emerald Buddha, close to The City Pillar Shrine.

The red or yellow vehicles themselves resemble a 'Blackpool tram' - The Bangkok City Tram (Bus) TourWe took our Tram tour of Bangkok in mid-November 2007, after getting information from the BMA Tourist Division Office.

The tour starts on the hour between 0800 and 1600 and lasts about 30 to 45 minutes depending on Bangkok's traffic at a cost of 30 Bht per person. There is only the one pick-up / drop-off point. This, we were advised was 'for health and safety reasons',which is a pity because the route passes the backpacker area around The Khao San Road.

Seating of slatted wood - The Bangkok City Tram (Bus) TourThe red or yellow vehicles themselves resemble a 'Blackpool tram' without glass and seating of slatted wood, running on tyres not rails. There is a live running commentary but only in Thai and no literature or map was available in any language at all.

The route followed a figure of eight through the west side of the oldest part of Bangkok city known as Rattanakosin Island, north of Khlong Loi (canal) and south of Khlong Bang Lamphu (Banglampu Canal).

Most of the tourist attractions that the tram passes are behind high walls or shielded by trees and all you see is mainly commercial Bangkok and its traffic!

Phra Sumen Fort - The Bangkok City Tram (Bus) TourThe exceptions are in the open area of the Phra Sumen Fort, park and King's Riverside Throne Room plus the National Museum of Thailand.

At the time we took the City Tram Tour we had been in Bangkok six weeks, so have some idea of how the land lies. The route could be extended to show more of some of the cities interesting areas, say out as far as the more visual Democracy Monument, Loha Prasat, Giant Swing and the Phraeng Sapphasatsuphakit Entrance, all in the Rattanakosin Island district.
