Bangkok Underground Train System -
Mass Rapid Transit (MRT)

The MRT is operated by
The Mass Rapid Transport Authority of Thailand

The Bangkok Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) runs from Bang Sue in the north of Bangkok through some of the newer parts of Bangkok and touches the old city at its Hua Lamphong terminus on the south end. The 'Initial System Project', the Blue Line (Hua Lamphong to Bang Sue Section), The M.R.T. Chaloem Ratchamongkhon Line.

Two other lines are planned:

The 24km long 'Orange Line' - Bang Kapi to Bang Bumru and the 40km long 'Purple Line' - Bang Yai to Rat Burana. Both new MRT lines are due for completion by mid 2013 and open in the spring of 2014.

The foundation stone was laid at Hua Lamphong Railway Station on 19 November 1996.

The stone was laid by H.M. King Bhumibol Adulyadej and remains as a part of the historic display that lines the main entrance tunnel to the underground station.

The MRT runs from 06.00 to 24.00 daily. There are trains every 6 to 7 minutes (more in the rush hours) whilst the Metro operates.

There are token / ticket booths and automated token machines at all stations.

There is a permanent police / security guard presence on every platform.

There is also a strict No Smoking - No Eating (or Chewing) - No Drinking (No open cans or bottles) - No littering policy on the main platforms and within the trains. This is enforced, and we mean en-forced, by the ever present police.

The MRT passenger carriages are the probably the cleanest public transport vehicles we have seen (Just pipping the Calgary, Canada MRT)!

There are quite a few places worth visiting along the MRT system. We would recommend a full day or two half days just hopping on and off the MRT at every station. You will certainly see Bangkok in all its guises. With an adult day pass at *****Bht it is well worth the experience!
