The Marian Plum or Maprang Wan

Thailand Fruit Marian Plum, Maprang Wan - Anacardiaceae

Marian Plum, Maprang Wan - Anacardiaceae

The marian plum fruit has an orange skin and looks like a plum, called maprang in Thai, the fruit is native to northern Sumatra, Malasia and western Java. The tree belongs to the same family as the mango, Anacardiaceae, and it has similar leaves, albeit smaller. The tree can grow to a height of around 30 metres, yeilding an annual fruit harvest of oval-shaped fruit the size of large hens eggs three years after planting, and when ripe the fruit turns yellow-orange.

We started to see maprang, marian plums in and around Bangkok in late February and into March which is the season for the fruit in central Thailand, prices varied according to size and quality of the fruit available, starting at 20 THB for a plate full weighing about 500g.

Depending on taste, Thais variously call it 'maprang wan' which is very sweet, and 'mayongchit' where the sweetness is tempered with a sour tinge, and like ripe mango, the fruit has high beta carotene and anti-oxidant properties known to inhibit cancers and other diseases.
